Stable Talk: Putting Back the RPG in MMORPG

Mogging Cookies to Fruit = Bad Idea

Is WoW more important than school? Why are Hunter abilities useless in PVP?? There’s a new 40 vs. 40 battleground in the making!? Is WoW finally bringing back the RPG in MMORPG?! Why do old people look like they’re chewing on something when they’re not!?! All this and more on this blogisode of Stable Talk! [insert “Ladies and Gentlemen” by Saliva here]

No. Hence, I have not posted a blog since the beginning of the month. Remember, kids, where there is no knowledge, there is no power. And power leads to fear. Fear leads to anger. Angler leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Wait… I think I just contradicted my point about education. Let me start over. Only YOU can prevent forest fires. Shit. Never mind…

There has been a lot of discussion and complaining about the announced specifics in the 4.3 patch; particularly, transmogrification. I’m sure by now everyone knows what transmogrification, or “mogging,” is. But, for those who do not, here is a quick explanation. In patch 4.3, Blizzard will be introducing in WoW a feature known as transmogrification. What this will allow players to do is make their current gear look like almost any piece of gear they own. A really neat concept if you ask me.

Anyways, as previously stated, there been a lot of the complaints about “mogging” which include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Sacrificing content for vanity

People want content. That is an obvious statement to make. But, there is also another obvious statement to make here. READ THE REST OF THE F&#@ING PATCH! The patch will also be introducing three new instances, the final raid content of Cataclysm, and an entire island dedicated to Darkmoon Faire affairs! The excitement of the idea of “mogging” has been so popular that it has forced people to overlook the content portion of the patch. But, that’s just like society overall today isn’t it. “Oh, that’s way too much to read. I’ll just wait till someone mentions something about it and I’ll express my feelings towards the article in its entirety from the excerpt that the community has acknowledged.” There is actual game content in the patch so this complaint is null and void.

Too many restrictions

Really? The damn feature hasn’t even been released yet and people are already complaining about its restrictions? Give me a break!

So, what are the restrictions anyway? Currently, the restrictions include the following:

– Armor class can only be “mogged” to the same armor class

– The gear/weapon needs to have stats

– Legendary weapons are not a viable source for “mogging”

– No gray/white rarity gear

Of course, everything is subject to change. This is what people do not seem to understand. This game has been out since 2004 and people STILL haven’t realized that BLIZZARD has never released a feature in its entirety! There will be updates, fixes, and upgrades to the system. This is how this works people. It’s called prototyping. It’s first tested in PTRs. Then according to the feedback of the users, Blizzard will implement changes to the thing. When they feel like it’s good enough to make it public, they release it as an official patch. Then, since even more people will be using it, they will receive MORE feedback and continue implementing changes and updating the prototypes. You see, this is one of the positive aspects of it being an MMO. The entire game is but a prototype that continues being altered to satisfy the customer’s needs. Which actually brings me to the next complaint people have.

Blizzard caving in to casual’s demands (again)

First of all, this is NOT a casuals-only demand. This is a feature that almost every MMO nowadays offers or has some sort of variation of it. Including MMOs like DCU Online and Champions Online. So, this is a feature long overdue for World of Warcraft. But, the biggest point to make here is that World of Warcraft is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game! The keyword being Role-Playing. If this feature serves any purpose whatsoever, it’s to putting the Role-Playing back in MMORPG. That is the game we play folks. So, get over it.

South of the Maelstrom lies what seems to have been a strategically placed piece of uncharted land. That is, until now. Both faction leaders, Garrosh Hellscream and King Varian Wrynn have sent their most trusted marshals to the island, for the acquirement of this land will ensure an advantage over Deathwing’s forces.

As a large scale battleground, each side attempts to fight through the ranks in order to defeat the enemy marshals and militia, and ultimately secure access of the land. Prepare yourselves for a battle of epic proportions for only the most dedicated will survive this battle for glory.

You stick your johnson outside the gunline, you will be shot.

Welcome to the new 40 vs. 40 battleground! So, what is the actual concept of this battleground? Take 40 Horde, 40 Alliance and place them in an island with flat terrain. No mountains. No hills. No line of sight issues. Just campsites. Each faction will have three camp sites with a Marshal, Field Marshal and Grand Marshal respectively placed in control of the sites. Each Marshal will provide the battleground teams with a specific buff (damage buff, healing buff, stamina buff). Whenever a specific Marshal is defeated, the team will lose the buff that was once in their possession. After the Marshals are defeated, it is now time to destroy the rest of the militia, a.k.a., the opposing team.

The first team to defeat all three Marshals and kill 600 of the opposing team members will win the battle for glory! The 600 kills will work as resources in Alterac Valley in the sense that for every honor kill you get, the other team loses 1 resource.

Oh, and one more thing. I just made all that up. But, wouldn’t it be pretty freaking awesome!? Since we’re in the topic of PVP, I believe it is time for me to QQ a bit.

So, what does EVERY class except the Hunter have in common? Two things actually. The ability to heal and/or the ability to get right into your face again with no problem. Don’t deny it. You know it be true. EVERY class can heal themselves! This includes the Rogue and Warrior! Why in the hell is a Warrior able to heal himself? And I’m not talking about using bandages either.

If there was one thing that Hunters had as an advantage was the fact that they could get to a specific distance and stay away from you at all times. But hell, that is definitely no longer the case. All Hunter abilities are now useless! Here is a list!

Traps: Serves the purpose to slow, freeze, poison, aoe damage or place a dot. Which is mostly effective in a PVP situation? The slow, or the frost trap. Oh, I just realized its name got changed to Ice Trap. Whatever. Anyways, this trap is only “effective” on melee. That is, if they are not always IMMUNE to them!!! GahhH!!!!

Flare: Exposes hidden and invisible enemies. Yeah, my ass. I’ve stood on TOP of a goddam flare and still get sapped by a rogue without ever seeing him. USELESS PIECE OF CRAP.

Disengage: My awesome skill to leap backwards to make some room. Oh, but wait. That’s pointless against ALL casters. So, what about melee? Let’s see.

Rogue? Shadowstep across the world.

DK? Deathgrip and /lol at you.

Paladin? Hand of Freedom, Bubble, Hammer of Justice, you name it.

Warrior? They can leap across a fucking gorge so thats no longer an issue for them!

Self-Heal: Non-Existent. F^%# YOU.

Feign Death: This is probably the best thing we got going for us right now. A slick way to get the other guys to lose you as a target. It buys you a few seconds especially if you’re in an arena. And may completely save your ass in a battleground if the other guy isn’t paying attention and just runs away because he thought he murdered you. So feign death? Still much love.

All this Hunter PVP reminiscing is giving me heartburn, so I think it’s time for me to relax. And what a better way to do so then by listening to some music. Here is the ear candy of the blogisode.

It has been 5 long, excruciating years since this band released a CD. Finally, on August 29, 2011, their 10th album has been released for the world to bask in. Now, let me warn you. They did lose their lead guitarist, due to the fact that he wanted to focus on his solo career. They picked up someone who has played with them before and knows his stuff to say the least. Well, without further ado, I introduce to you a song from the new album, “I’m With You.” The song of choice? “Look Around” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Nom Nom Nom

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Sorry it’s not as extensive as my previous blogisodes. Unfortunately, I got a lot going on right now which will also affect the frequency of my blogs. Ces’t la vie, right? Well, until next time, it’s time for me to make like a tree and get outta here!
